Dog poops in the basement every time we leave her home alone.

Asked by: 869 views Dog Behavior

She is an older dog and generally very obedient and well trained. However, with increased frequency, everytime the house is empty she goes in the basement. We put her our multiple times a day, take her for regular walks, and she isn’t allowed in the basement (she knows this too, I’ve never seen her go in the basement while people are home). Recently we’ve been able to leave for as few as 5 minutes and know there is a mess in the basement. We’ve tried leaving her outside while we’re gone, but still, every time we forget there is a mess. I’m really frustrated this because her spot of choice is my bedroom! I clean up as best as possible, tell her no when I find it. I just have no idea what else to do.

Other things: She is kind of an odd dog. She was afraid of going outside the first few months we had her. She loves going in car rides and feels acts rejected if we don’t let her go. She generally avoids going to the bathroom in the back yard unless she has to prefering to go on walks. Knowing all this though, we do take her for regular walks. She’ll make a mess even 20 minutes after we take her for a walk, so I know it’s not a desperatly needs to go situation. She is well trained, never has made a mess (ever) while someone was home. Very insecure dog in general.

My dog used to do the same thing when i used to leave him at home. He used to poop in my bedroom and he knew that i really hated it. But now i know why he used to do that. It was his way of telling me that he hates being left alone at home. He used to miss my presence and thus felt lonely. And in order to punish me, he used to create a mess at my place. For his sake, i left my job and started working virtually.

Animals are very loving creatures and quite demanding as well! They love getting attention, especially dogs. They don’t want to be away from their loved ones even for a second! The only solution which i have for you is to spend as much time as you can with your dog because that’s what she wants from you :)

    chao!

She just hates it when you are gone. Dogs being left alone suffer from stress related behavior. Your dog seem to suffer from separation anxiety which leads her to be destructive and so she does all the things which she knows you don’t like about her.

Give your dog a tiring exercise session or a long walk before you leave, provide her with lots and lots of fresh water and food and also toys so that she remains busy all the time when you are not there. And try to block the room which you don’t want her to go.

My dog is the exact same thing! He had never had an accident EVER.

I just moved to a new house, started an 8-5 job and was gone a lot more than I had been in college. My solution was getting a dog door so he could go in and out whenever he wants, and we go on a walk EVERY morning before I go to work.

I agree with the people above, the pooping where he knows he shouldn’t is a punishment and separation thing. My dog (Simba) has terrible separation anxiety and he still has episodes once in a while.. but having a routine has helped a lot.
