How do you house break a dog?

Asked by: 953 views Dog Training

PLEASE READ INFORMATION:
My family and I have been having trouble training our dog not to pee and poo on the floor. She’s a Chihuahua. She’s about 1 year old, and we’ve had her for about 9 months. We’ve tried pads and even hung a bell on the door leading to the backyard. We’ve trained her to ring the bell when she needs to go, but the problem is if we can’t open the door for her in time she’ll just go on the floor. It’s like the pad isn’t even there. Please do not suggest to get a dog door. We’ve already thought of that and my parents don’t like the idea. We might have to give her away. She’s a pain, but i love her. Please give me some advice, ideas, anything. I really need some help. Sorry you had to read this all. Thank you.

Well it’s pretty simple, you need to figure out a way to open the door whenever the dog needs to go potty. If you aren’t using a puppy pad that has a scent on it to attract the dog to use it, try one of those. But basically a dog door is the best thing and you just need to convince your family of that.

I agree, there is no reason a dog door wouldn’t work. There are all types of dog doors available including patio dog doors (which are also called modular dog doors) and those types fit sliding glass doors. There are dog doors for practically all sizes and breeds of dogs. And after all, a physical door isn’t that expensive if you need to replace it down the road.

What r u talking about giving her away??!!?? You need to tune up yr game.

Dog door is a good suggestion. You say “please don’t suggest a doggy door” and that makes yr life more difficult. Sounds like yr parents need to get behind this idea, and quick.

Puppy pads are good too, and what that other guy said, you need to get the scented kind.

Obviously this dog cut all potty training classes when puppy school was in lol.
I think it is kind of cool that u trained this dog to ring a bell when it has to go. But it sounds to me like you have to set alarms for yrself. Take that dog outside every hour on the hour for a week or so. Then tone it back a bit. I wld set an alarm and open the door every hr and let that dog go out and do its biz. Sooner or later between you and yr alarm and the dog and the bell, you and yr dog are gonna figure out this poo problem.

Shoot. *snaps fingers* There are also doggie diapers if your dog is a complete failure in this department. I say you push the doggie door idea at yr folx one more time. Kicking your dog to the curb (even though it is a chewawawa) isn’t cool.

I was about to post doggie diapers and Tony M beat me to it. Between the diapers, the pads and you paying CLOSE ATTENTION to your dog’s behavior, I give this about 2 more weeks and you should have it all under control.

Congrats on the bell training! That’s kind of cool.

We would recommend seriously considering getting some quality Dog Doors and Puppy Pads which are also called Piddle Pads. Our favorite are the Little Stinkers Wee Wee Pads.
