New Unruly Puppy…

Puppy Issues

My sister recently adopted a 1 year old female Plott-hound/ lab mix. She’s a sweet and very energetic dog. However, sometimes when she’s very excited and doesn’t want to listen, she’ll start to pace in front of us, avoiding contact, while barking and snarling. How do we stop her from exhibiting this behavior and assert dominance? Often times when you try to handle her and put her on her back she nips and shakes while in this state. Also just curious, when my aunt brings over here tiny 8 year-old female westie, our dog will follow her and sniff her constantly, walk in front of her to block her path, and sometimes paw at her playfully. (My aunts dog most often ignores this behavior, I’m just afraid she my snap one day, and the new 1 year puppy is much bigger and stronger than her)

It sounds like you need to do some training with your sister’s dog. The main thing is that a dog that age and breed needs all the exercise they can get. Sometimes a 20 minute walk just doesn’t cut it, some dogs really need to run, and run, and run. It seems like your sisters dog is trying to be the Alpha and you need to establish dominance. It’s easy to do this when you feed your dog. I’ve accomplished this with an aggressive dog by having all members of the household hand-feeding the dog the dry kibble at meal times. This show the dog that the human controls the food, which is one of the most important things to the dog. Stay with it and be consistant!

I agree, it boils down to training, Have some treats handy and when she starts to get excited show her the treat and get her to sit, then give her the treat. This should interrupt the bad behavior and get her to learn to be calmer.

All is needed is a good training for him and a good exercise as he is too energetic he needs to burst out those excess of energy which he has. Give give a good exercise 2 times a day. Hope it works.
