Rescue collie issues

Dog Behavior

Hello

2 weeks ago we rehomed a 3 year old rescue border collie. She was lovely until she got an abcess in her paw. Now I can’t take her out if I know other dogs will be there as she has started barking and trying to attack them. She barks a lot at home too and at cars/tractors but otherwise she is still our soppy girl. Also she has become a little too loving with peoples legs, if you know what I mean! lol

Her paw was operated on but she is now recovered though it it may still be a littlr sore. What do I do???

Seems to me like you have three issues: your dog’s paw, barking, and ‘leg’ issues. I’ll address them in order.

For your dog’s paw, follow your vet’s instructions, limit physical walks and activities as directed to ensure the paw heals properly. The paw issue does not relate at all to the other issues and once it’s healed shouldn’t be an issue. If you want to can invest in some dog boots to keep the paw clean and able to heal quicker.

For your barking issues it sounds like your dog is trying to get attention and assert their dominance. You should definitely start scolding your dog when they bark excessively and at things they shouldn’t. A simple ‘no’ may not work at first but be consistent and offer a treat as a reward when they stop barking or don’t bark at all.

The third ‘leg’ issue is a definite dominance things. Dogs (regardless of gender) will mount legs, other animals, etc. to assert that they are the dominant dog. This isn’t cute and shouldn’t be encouraged. Your ‘new’ dog needs to learn that it is lower on the chain than humans, when they mount you should immediately scold the dog and if necessary physically remove them from the situation

Good luck and let us know how it goes

    Mary,
Thank you very much for your help.
Since her paw has recovered, Molly has been much better. We make progress every day now that she can go out running.
I had not considered that the leg issue was a dominance thing. Believe me, we do not encourage it!! :)

    Thanks again
    Kaye
